When people find bed bugs, the couch or the mattress is usually the first thing they want out of the house. It feels like progress. Most of the time it’s an expensive mistake. At Hot Bugz, we’ve spent 16 years heat treating homes across Denver and the Front Range, and we rarely ask anyone to throw furniture away. Heat kills bed bugs and their eggs inside the mattress, the sofa, and the dresser, so you keep what you own along with the money you would have spent replacing it.

Can you keep furniture that has bed bugs?

Yes. Most infested furniture can be kept once it has been heated to a lethal temperature all the way through. Bed bugs don’t damage the structure of a mattress or couch. They hide in it, and once every bug and egg inside is dead, the piece is usable again.

The EPA recommends heating infested items or rooms to at least 120°F for 90 minutes to make sure eggs are killed. A Hot Bugz treatment brings the space to 135 to 140°F, so the heat reaches the core of cushions, box springs, and wood joints instead of stopping at the surface.

Why doesn’t throwing out the couch solve the problem?

Discarding furniture removes some bugs but leaves the rest of the infestation behind. Bed bugs spread out from where people sleep and sit, settling into baseboards, carpet edges, outlet covers, picture frames, and wall voids. Drag the old sofa to the curb and the bugs living three feet away in the trim are still there, waiting for the new one to arrive.

The EPA makes a similar point in its prevention tips, noting that throwing things out is expensive, adds stress, and can spread bed bugs to other people’s homes. A mattress carried down a hallway or stairwell can drop bugs along the way, and a couch left at the curb often gets picked up by someone else.

How much money does heat treatment save?

The savings depend on what you would otherwise replace, but for most households they run into the thousands. Current 2026 retail price guides put a mid-range queen mattress at roughly $700 to $1,500 and a full-size sofa at around $1,400 to $1,800. Add a box spring, a bed frame, a recliner, and a child’s bed, and the bill climbs quickly, before delivery or haul-away fees.

Chemical treatment carries its own costs. In our experience, pesticide programs need at least three visits over about 30 days, and bed bugs that have built up resistance to common insecticides can survive all of them. A Hot Bugz heat treatment usually takes 5 to 10 hours, and you’re back home the same day.

What affects the price of a heat treatment?

Every job is priced after an inspection. Square footage, how far the infestation has spread, building materials, location, and access all play a part, and Hot Bugz offers a payment plan for customers who need one. Held up against the cost of refurnishing even one bedroom, the numbers usually favor heat.

Will heat damage my furniture?

No. Treatment temperatures are safe for mattresses, upholstered furniture, wood, and most household contents. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services explains in its heat treatment guide that the temperatures used are enough to kill bed bugs without being high enough to damage belongings.

A short list of items should come out first, including plants, electronics, and delicate materials. Our treatment prep list spells out exactly what to remove, and our technicians stay on-site monitoring temperatures for the entire treatment.

When is furniture actually not worth saving?

Replacement makes sense only when a piece is falling apart or so heavily infested that keeping it isn’t practical. Hot Bugz doesn’t ask customers to discard anything unless it’s totally infested. A mattress with a torn cover and heavy staining might be one of those cases. Even then, a zippered encasement that seals all six sides can make a treated mattress worth keeping, and the EPA recommends leaving encasements on for a year.

If you do plan to replace something, wait until after the treatment. New furniture brought into an untreated home is just fresh habitat.
